Apple Recovery Partition
Deleting the recovery partition seems straightforward for older versions of OS X (e.g. this guide for Snow Leopard), but I can't figure out how to do this in Sierra. This is probably due to the switch from HFS to AppleCoreStorage as mentioned on this Make Use Of page. Notably, the 'Debug' panel is also gone from Disk Utility, so I took the suggestion from this thread to use the third-party Paragon software.
Oct 12, 2018 Newer Mac computers and some older Mac computers automatically try to start up from macOS Recovery over the Internet when unable to start up from the built-in recovery system. When that happens, you see a spinning globe instead of an Apple logo during startup. To further enhance your user experience, Apple lets you have a physical copy of OS X Recovery USB drive created with Disk Assistant. It is a great option to have because if your drive is brutally damaged, there is a possibility of not being able to use the recovery volume and you don't necessarily have an internet connection all the time.
- Just noticed after installing 10.13 beta 2 as a complete clean install while using APFS as the drive format the installer does not make a Recovery Partition. Anyone else run into this issue? If so how do you get the Recovery Parititon to show back up?

- Nov 01, 2012 The Recovery Partition essentially takes the place of the DVD installation disc that was previously shipped with new Macs. Instead of a physical DVD, the data is now on a hidden partition on your hard drive. This has immediate benefits. It also has drawbacks. With the Recovery Partition, anyone can boot your Mac and reset your passwords.
- The Recovery partition in Mac OS X is an important component of a system install in that it allows you to troubleshoot a computer, repair drives, restore from backups, and even reinstall Mac OS if need be. Nonetheless, in some specific situations you may find that a Mac does not have a Recovery.
This is how I tried, and failed:
- Back up system on Time Machine external hard drive
- Download Paragon
- Create a bootable recovery USB stick using Paragon Boot Media Builder
- Delete 'Recovery HD' volume in Paragon's Hard Disk Manager (worked fine)
- Reboot
Upon reboot I saw the flashing folder icon labeled with a question mark (and it did not go away). Thankfully I was able to boot from the recovery stick and reinstall Sierra without even having to use my Time Machine backup.
So, does anyone know how to do this properly? The Make Use Of page implies that Carbon Copy Cloner gives an option to restore the drive without including the recovery partition, but the details are not clear. Any help is greatly appreciated!

macOS Recovery is part of the built-in recovery system of your Mac. You can start up from macOS Recovery and use its utilities to recover from certain software issues or take other actions on your Mac.
How to use macOS Recovery
Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold Command (⌘)-R or one of the other macOS Recovery key combinations on your keyboard. Continue holding until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe. Startup is complete when you see the utilities window:
After starting up from macOS Recovery, select from these utilities, then click Continue:
Restore From Time Machine Backup: Restore your Mac from a Time Machine backup of your Mac.
Reinstall macOS (or Reinstall OS X): Download and reinstall the Mac operating system.

Get Help Online: Use Safari to browse the web and find help for your Mac. Links to Apple's support website are included. Browser plug-ins and extensions are disabled.
Disk Utility: Use Disk Utility to repair or erase your startup disk or other hard disk.
These additional utilities are available from the Utilities menu in the menu bar:
- Firmware Password Utility or Startup Security Utility
- Terminal
To quit macOS Recovery, choose Restart or Shut Down from the Apple () menu. If you want to choose a different startup disk before quitting, choose Startup Disk from the Apple menu.
